When mixing, the goal is to keep the peak of your audio under at least -3dB and in the lower green half. Each bar represents 1dB and the central threshold is set at -3dB for all mixing presets. The central display has a peak meter which gives you a reading of how close your track is to 0dBFS. It can also reveal if you have low frequencies placed too wide in your master.
This can highlight if elements in your mix are sounding too harsh. The Side button isolates the edges of your stereo image. You can use a mid-side EQ to make precise changes to the tonal balance of your stereo field. When listening exclusively to the Mid channel you might decide to make specific EQ changes to bring out individual elements in the master. The Mid button isolates the center of your stereo image. Select MONO and then either the or buttons to limit the output to either the right or left monitor respectively. This is because the low end can feel 'hyped' when listening in mono through two monitors. Many listeners will experience your music in mono when they are in clubs or bars. When auditioning your master in mono it is advisable to listen through one monitor. This summing process can cause dramatic changes to your master. The MONO button sums your dual stereo signal into one single output. You can reset all six sections back to green simultaneously by clicking ‘RESET’ in the top right corner, or by navigating back to zero in the transport of your DAW. You can navigate back to this home display by clicking LEVELS in the top left corner. If an issue has been resolved you can reset the section from red back to green by clicking the section icon. These dedicated displays give you a relevant insight into the technical details of your mix. The six section icons are clickable and open up a new dedicated central display. If there is an aspect of your mix that needs to be fixed, the section will glow red. If there are no issues with your mix, the sections will glow green. LEVELS assesses your audio as it passes through. The home display has six sections labeled PEAK, STEREO FIELD, LUFS, LRA, DYNAMIC RANGE and BASS SPACE.

#FIXING LOUDNESS IZOTOPE INSIGHT UPDATE#
To update to the latest version of Insight, simply download the patch using iZotope Product Portal.
This centralizes all the controls, rather than take up space in the main panel.

You can hit “analyze” in Pro Tools AudioSuite for a faster analysis (that way you don't have to listen through the entire program in real time to get a measurement).Īnother update we made was to move the controls for Peak, Loudness, and Gate (which used to be positioned next to the Targets dropdown menu) into the Target selection panel.
#FIXING LOUDNESS IZOTOPE INSIGHT OFFLINE#
Note that this process works offline too. To get an accurate reading, the user will need to first select the Target, then play all the way through the program in order to make sure that the integrated measurement meets the selected loudness Target. Integrated loudness is a measurement that is averaged over the duration of the program. Here’s a screenshot of the Netflix Target selected below: Version 2.1 comes with a new Target named "Netflix" that enables the Dialogue gate and sets the LRA targets to the expected values. This makes it easy to see if you’re hitting the mark. Insight 2 comes with lots of presets (called Layouts) from which you can select a loudness Target. This requires reliable metering for broadcast loudness standards. Currently, all of this work is outsourced and all of it must hit the new specs listed above. And for every show they offer their subscribers, children’s content must be made available in 24 languages, and adult-oriented content in 8 languages. In fact, Netflix spent around $8 billion on content in 2018. This change in Netflix’s preferred average loudness impacts a lot of broadcast and re-recording mixers, many of whom use iZotope’s Insight metering plug-in to make sure the shows and movies they mix meet delivery specs. Read more about Netflix audio mix specifications and best practices here. Last year, Netflix updated their audio mix specifications, recommending that content delivered for streaming meet a dialog-gated loudness target of -27 LKFS. Working on an audio mix for Netflix, or just interested in broadcast loudness standards? This post is for you! We’ll cover Netflix’s recent update to their loudness delivery standards, and how we updated Insight 2 to meet them.
